Installing OpenVMS

Installing OpenVMS is pretty straight forward. For both VAX and Alpha, the CDROM distribution is bootable. For the Alpha, it will prompt you for what you want to do. For the VAX, you start with a "StandAlone Backup", sort of a very limited DCL interface with only the BACKUP command available.

For a sample installation, you may want to read the appropriate OpenVMS Hobbyist Guide for your architecture. It not only provides some history of the OpenVMS Hobbyist Program, but walks you through a sample OpenVMS installation.

For another point of view, you might want to check out Pat Jankowiak's beginning tutorial on his experiences installing OpenVMS V6.1 on a VAX.
