The Internet Personals Ad Hints
So, you're wanting to write or respond to a Personal Ad. But what do
you say? After running this site for a couple of years, we've seen
all kinds of things. But here's a few hints to start things off.
This is not a complete list, but it's a start.
- Be Honest.
Okay, this is pretty obvious, but it's worth stating.
If you're looking for something in particular, say so. Just because
you aren't seen on-line is not a reason to lie about yourself. After
all, if you eventually meet, they'll figure it out.
- Tell something about yourself.
Don't be afraid to tell a few
things about yourself. Be expressive. This isn't like the newspaper
Ads where you're limited to 40 words or have to pay per word. It's
free, and it's okay to write a short story.
- Include a picture.
More people will be attracted to your Ad if
you include a picture. It doesn't have to be a Glamour Shot, but
it should tell something about yourself.
- Personalize the response.
Sometimes, someone will mail the same
message to dozens of different Ads. These are often very generic,
with no sign that they've read the Ad. Don't you think the recipient
can tell? Include something about the Ad that triggered your response.
Yes, that means more than just the name at the top of the Ad. Give
them a reason to think that you're worth their time, and there is
something specific about them you like.
- Watch for fakes.
Like we've said, we don't screen people. So
when you read Ads for "Female with 36D-24-34 looking for erotic
E-mail", be careful. Sometimes the Ads of women looking for
"cybersex" are really guys instead! After all, when was the last
time a woman you know introduced herself by her measurements?
- Have Fun.
After all, that is what this is all about, right?
Good luck!
