Most of these programs grew out of a desire to experiment with different variables for Linear RF power amplifiers. Unfortunately, a "ground-up" approach to the design of a PI-L output circuit for use with specific voltages, conduction angles, and tube designs, while producing very accurate results when pencil is put to paper, is extremely time consuming.
There are quick, very close results when reasonable data are entered. In some cases, you may bomb out, for instance if you try to use ridiculous values which are too far outside the range customarily found in tube gear, such as a Q of 3 in the plate circuit, etc.. Designing 12 volt power supplies is not a good idea with these programs, but if you want to design a 6000 volt power supply and a 4-1000A AB1 stage, you will be pleased! In any case, an error will terminate the program safely. These programs will run under plain old dos, but don't let that put you off.
