Setting up Windows95 with Internet America

Make sure you have your windows95 CD (or disks), before you start this procedure.

I. Installing Modem Capabilities Into Windows 95

Do this part if Windows 95 has not already been made aware of your modem's presence.

  1. Doubleclick on "My Computer"
  2. Doubleclick on "Control Panel"
  3. Doubleclick on "Modems" (If there is already a modem installed, cancel and go to step II)
  4. Click on "Next"
  5. Wait for detection, then Click on "Next"
  6. Fill in the "Location Information" screen, then Click on "Next"
  7. Click on "Finish"

II. TCP/IP Installation First you have to set up your client.

  1. Doubleclick on "My Computer"
  2. Doubleclick on "Control Panel"
  3. Doubleclick on "Network"
  4. There should be "Client for Microsoft Networks", "Dial-up Adapter", and "TCP/IP". If there are extra components installed AND you are on a stand alone computer, remove them. You may leave "File and printer sharing" if you have it. If there is any question on removing any component please call Internet America's Tech Support at (214)861-2999 (or metro (214)263-2950).
  5. If there are any missing go to the next steps. If these three are installed goto step III.

Adding "Client for Microsoft Networks"

  1. Click "Add"
  2. Doubleclick on "Client"
  3. Scroll down and select "Microsoft"
  4. Doubleclick on "Client for Microsoft Networks"

At this point, it will ask you to select an adapter.(DEVICE)

  1. Scroll down and select "Microsoft"
  2. Doubleclick on "Dial-up Adapter"
  3. If it takes you back to the starting screen, click "Add" again, otherwise:
  4. Doubleclick on "Protocol"
  5. Scroll down and select "Microsoft"
  6. Doubleclick on "TCP/IP"

Now we have to remove extraneous protocols.

  1. Select "IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol"
  2. Click "Remove"
  3. Select "NetBEUI"
  4. Click "Remove"

The only thing left should be "Client for Microsoft Networks", "Dial-up Adapter", and "TCP/IP"

Now you may have to Identify yourself.

  1. Click the TAB "Identification"
  2. Computer Name: UserID (all lower case)
  3. Workgroup: world (all lower case)
  4. Computer Description: Pentium 90 (...or whatever)
  5. Click "OK"
  6. Click "OK", again.

Windows 95 will now copy the files from the floppy disks (or CD-ROM) onto your hard drive. When this is finished, it will tell you that you need to restart. Reboot now by clicking "YES". DO NOT simply turn off power and turn it back on!! When Windows restarts it will ask for your name and password. For name, give it your UserID (all lower case) For password, LEAVE BLANK (it will ask for password verification, leave both spaces BLANK) It will not ask for login in the future.

III. TCP/IP Configuration

The default settings for "Client for Microsoft Networks"and "Dial-up Adapter" are perfect for use with Internet America. TCP/IP needs to be configured.

  1. Doubleclick on "My Computer"
  2. Doubleclick on "Control Panel"
  3. Doubleclick on "Network"
  4. Select "TCP/IP"
  5. Click on "Properties"
  6. Click the TAB "IP Address"
  7. Select "Obtain an IP Address Automatically"
  8. Click the TAB "Gateway"
  9. If there is no gateway in "installed gateway" click the add button and there should then be an installed gateway of "0.0.0.0"
  10. Click the TAB "Bindings"
  11. Check "Client for Microsoft Networks" (should already be checked -- should also be the only one there)
  12. Click the TAB "Advanced" (Property:None, Value:Present -- with a checked box near the bottom)
  13. Click the TAB "WINS Configuration"
  14. Select "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution"
  15. Click the TAB "DNS Configuration"
  16. Select "Enable DNS"
  17. Host: Internet America
  18. Domain: airmail.net
  19. DNS Server Search Order: 204.178.72.1
  20. Click "Add"
  21. Add a second DNS. DNS Server Search Order: 204.178.72.30
  22. Click "Add"
  23. Click "OK" (It may be off the bottom of the screen -- it is the first button)
  24. Click "OK", again. It will inform you that a reboot is necessary for the changes to take affect. It will ask if you want to reboot now. Click "Yes"

IV. Installing Dial-Up Networking

  1. Doubleclick on "My Computer"
  2. Doubleclick on "Control Panel"
  3. Doubleclick on "Add/Remove Programs"
  4. Click the TAB "Windows Setup"
  5. Select "Communications"
  6. Click "Details"
  7. Check "Dial-Up Networking" (But **NOT** Direct Cable Connection!!)
  8. Click "OK"
  9. Click "OK", again.

Windows 95 will now copy the files from the floppy disks (or CD-ROM) onto your hard drive. After it is completed, re-boot your computer.

V. Configuring Dial-Up Networking

  1. Doubleclick on "My Computer"
  2. Doubleclick on "Dial-Up Networking"
  3. Doubleclick on "Make New Connection" (This may happen automatically)
  4. Click on "Next" only if "Make New Connection" comes up automatically
  5. Change "My Connection" to "Internet America"
  6. Click on "Next"
  7. Enter Internet America's area code and data phone number Dallas: (214)969-1090 Ft. Worth (817)885-8800 Corsicana (903)872-7792
  8. Click on "Next"
  9. Click on "Finish"
  10. Right click on "Internet America"
  11. Select "Create Shortcut"
  12. It will say you can't create one here, so click "yes" and place it on the desktop.

VI. If you had been using Trumpet Winsock(our old software), You will need to rename a file.

  1. Click "Start".
  2. Goto "Find".
  3. "file or folders".
  4. On the line that says "Named" type: winsock.dll
  5. Click "Find Now".
  6. When it has found all the files by that name(there may be 3 or more) select the one that is in the Inetusa folder.
  7. Goto "File". then "Rename".
  8. Rename it winsock.old

V. To connect to Internet America.

  1. Doubleclick "Shortcut to Internet America"
  2. Fill in your username and password (the username may already be there).
  3. Press "connect"
  4. It will then dial in and log you on.
  5. Bring up the application you wish to use and SURF!!!!
